A ground source heat pump extracts heat from the ground using a network of buried pipework known as a ground loop, then transfers that heat to water circulating through radiators, underfloor heating, and a hot water cylinder. Below roughly one metre, ground temperature in Ireland stays a stable 10–12⁰C year-round, giving ground source systems more consistent input heat than air-to-water systems during cold snaps.
Ground loops are installed either horizontally, in trenches across a large garden, or vertically, using one or more boreholes drilled 80–150 metres deep where garden space is limited. Horizontal loops require significantly more land but cost less to install than a borehole system.
Ground source heat pumps typically achieve a higher Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) than air-to-water systems, often 4.0–4.5, because the ground temperature they draw from doesn’t drop during winter cold snaps the way outdoor air does.
