An air-to-water heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it to water circulating through radiators, underfloor heating, and a hot water cylinder. The system works even at outdoor temperatures below freezing, using a refrigerant cycle to concentrate low-grade heat from the air into usable heat for the home.
Air-to-water systems are available as monobloc units, where all refrigerant components sit in a single outdoor unit connected to the home by water pipes, or split systems, with refrigerant piping running between an outdoor and indoor unit. Most Irish installations use monobloc systems, as they simplify installation and reduce the risk of refrigerant leaks indoors.
A well-specified air-to-water heat pump achieves a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) of 3.5–4.0 in the Irish climate, meaning it produces 3.5–4 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.
