An air-to-air heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and distributes it directly as warm air through indoor wall units or ducting, rather than heating water for radiators. The same system runs in reverse during summer, extracting heat from indoors and expelling it outside — giving air-to-air heat pumps a dual role as heating and air conditioning.
Air-to-air systems are commonly installed as single or multi-split units, with one outdoor compressor connected to one or more indoor wall-mounted units, or as a fully ducted system distributing air through the home via ceiling or floor vents. Because there’s no water circuit, installation is typically faster and less disruptive than an air-to-water system.
Air-to-air heat pumps do not heat domestic hot water. A separate hot water solution, such as an immersion heater or solar thermal system, is required alongside an air-to-air installation.

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) administers this grant through the Better Energy Homes Scheme. Air-to-air systems do not qualify for the Central Heating Upgrade grant, as they don’t use radiators or underfloor heating. A typical air-to-air heat pump installation costs between €4,000 and €9,000 depending on the number of indoor units required. After the SEAI grant of up to €7,500, single-room and small-home installations can have very low out-of-pocket costs.
It can, using a multi-split or fully ducted configuration, but most Irish homes install air-to-air as a supplementary system for an extension, converted attic, or as air conditioning alongside an existing wet heating system. It does not provide domestic hot water.
Yes. Air-to-air heat pumps are reversible — the same refrigerant cycle that provides heating in winter can run in reverse to provide cooling in summer, making the system dual-purpose year-round.
The SEAI Central Heating Upgrade grant of up to €2,000 only applies to systems using radiators or underfloor heating. Since air-to-air systems don’t use a wet heating circuit, that portion of the grant doesn’t apply, bringing the maximum to €7,500 instead of €12,500.
